Back to Basics community challenge

Another challenge

08/02/2019

📅 Date : February 8, 2019
🎮 Game : Trials Fusion
📍 Event : Back to Basics – Building & Speedrun Challenge

Overview

The Back to Basics Challenge was a cross-platform community event for Trials Fusion, hosted by Vantier (Trials Elite member) split into two parts:

  1. Track Building Contest (January 6 – February 8)

  2. Speedrunning Contest (February 10 – February 17)

The competition was judged by Vantier and three other anonymous judges, with cash prizes for both builders and speedrunners.

Track Building Rules

  • Submission Deadline : February 8, 2019

  • Difficulty Range : Hard → Ninja 1–2 (targeting Extreme/Ninja 1 range)

  • Track Length : 25+ seconds

  • Theme : Open, but restricted to custom-built environments (see example in the video below).

  • Allowed Editor Categories :

    • Common_Game

    • Common_Physics Tools

    • General_Primitive Shapes

    • Environment_Water

    • Triggers & Events

    • All Effects (+DLC Effects)

Forbidden : Default terrain, water, or base world objects.

Performance caution : since all builds required custom assets, creators had to monitor visible object counts, especially for console playability.

Track Contest Winners

Each judge had 20 points to distribute among their Top 3 picks (80 points total = $80 prize pool).

  1. [BTB] Big Octo – by Diegonummer1 (PS4) → $28

  2. [BTB] Over and Over – by Ryphyz (PC) → $27

  3. [BTB] Blend – by xntr1cs (PS4) → $25

Speedrun Challenge

Players competed for the fastest combined time across the 3 winning tracks.

  • Open to all (except judges & track winners).

  • Cross-platform, but with only 3 winners total.

  • Deadline: February 17, 2019

Prizes :

  1. $15

  2. $10

  3. $5

Unfortunately, we don’t know who were the winners of the speedrun contest.

Search for the recent track “Uncommited” to see another example track that went for an abstract theme instead. (Worth noting the track doesn’t strictly follow this challenge on the custom cp’s, still a good example of what can be done regardless)

Track Judging/Payout

$$$ – Prize pool is $80(USD) and will be divided among the top 3 tracks based on the judges scores.

All 4 judges are allotted 20 points to distribute as they see fit across all submitted tracks.

There will be multiple voting rounds by the judges until 3 tracks remain.

Final voting results in 1 point = 1$ to track creator.

TL;DR – Min Payout for a track is 10$. Max payout is 60$. Based on Score.

Speedrun

Once winners have been selected from Building Challenge

Everyone (Excluding building challenge winners and previous judges), will have until February 17th (1 week) to get the fastest time possible on the winning tracks.

On February 17th……..the leaderboards, on all 3 platforms, for all 3 tracks, will be screenshotted/captured and compared.

The 3 people with the the lowest cumulative time on all 3 tracks will receive. 15, 10, and 5$ respectively.

You will be penalized 5 seconds for every fault on a track in the unforeseen event that the top 3 aren’t all 0 faulted due to difficulty or a cp exploit.

WINNERS

Prize money currently planned to be distributed through either amazon gift cards, steam gift cards, or similar.

WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY?

This is more of a test than anything, this will be my first time hosting anything like this. Depending on how this goes I may do this more regularly after Rising Launches and the dust has settled a bit. (Not necessarily with building restrictions imposed)

The reason for the severe building restrictions is for 2 reasons

  1. Offer an interesting puzzle/challenge that will force some builders out of their comfort zone (though others may feel right at home).
  2. A lot of builders at this point in time will normally be hesitant to go “all-out” on any track unless a much larger prize pool was offered because they would rather save up any grand ideas they have for the upcoming game. By forcing restrictions, it will allow these builders to HOPEFULLY feel more comfortable possibly building 1 final track for fusion, without needing to even consider 90% of the objects the editor has to offer. In my experience this is at first both a very limiting and at the same time “freeing” challenge. When options are severely limited, choices become easier to make and you don’t get caught up thinking about the infinite possibilities of the editor, though you may find that this challenge is hardly limiting at all depending on your theme.

The reason for the seemingly convoluted judging/payout system is to accommodate for the relatively unknown quality/quantity of tracks that a somewhat odd challenge, at this point in time, will produce. With this system I wont feel as bad about being forced to reward potentially subpar tracks too much, while at the same time leaving open the possibility of 3 really good tracks to all get rewarded more appropriately. I don’t think it makes sense to give potentially 4x as much of a reward to the 1st place track, when it may only be slightly better than the 3rd place track, especially in something as subjective as “track quality”.

For something more concrete like speedrunning, a standard payout makes a little more sense.

If you have any questions/concerns/comments let me know. And bookmark and keep an eye on this thread periodically if you plan on participating. I will update the post if any dates change, as well as let people know through the trials discord.

malheureuesment, nous n’avons pas les résultats pour ce contest
