Glossary
The unfiltered vocabulary of Trials players — rage, glory, and memes included.
- Please note that some explanations of these expressions may seem obvious, but keep in mind that some are provided for non-native English speakers, particularly for the large French-speaking community
- Afterburner / Postcombustion : Lighting the back of the bike on fire to make it fly like a rocket. Doable with a specific piece of code (native) in the track editor
- Airtime : TBD
- Balance : Staying balanced on the rear wheel on a slope
- Backward : A checkpoint where you must go backwards
- Bar spin : Swinging around a horizontal bar/pole to get yourself flung in any direction — video
- BOUGE : Literally means « MOVE, » and comes from player GT4, who said this to Maitrash during the 2020 World Cup because he wasn’t going fast enough for his taste. It instantly became a meme
- Bounce : Bouncing on the rear wheel
- Les Bouquins : Comes from a forum topic on trials.fr. It’s a mix between the Hall of Fame that was on the website back then and a glossary, but only with obscure community references, often from players who did or said crazy stuff
- Box : Technique where you climb a vertical wall (90°) from a nearly stationary position, using the right angle, throttle, and brake timing. If done with a front flip, it becomes a « flipbox »
- Brake bounce : Technique used in ninja tracks, typically used when dropping down onto a platform while seated. When the rear wheel hits the platform, tap brake and then lean forward. This gives you a more vertical bounce
- Brake Flip : TBD
- BW (Backwheel) : Rear wheel obstacle only — using the front wheel results in a fault
- Bunny hop : Jumping the bike by shifting weight back then forward at the right moment
- Choke : Cracking under pressure and failing something simple or choking near the finish
- Climb : Climbing steep slopes
- Coffin glitch : A glitch present at the release of Trials Fusion, which consisted of performing the FMX trick called “Coffin” to gain extra distance during a jump
- CP (Checkpoint) : Abbreviation for checkpoint — location you must pass to progress in a track
- Danners : A big fail near the end of a track, often at the final obstacle, ruining a nearly clean run. Come from the famous player DannersMac
- DNF (Did Not Finish) : Failing to complete a track — due to time, faults, or quitting
- Endo / Endo hop : TBD
- Fap : Technique that lets you raise the rear wheel by spamming the brake while accelerating on the front wheel. (Censored in Trials Rising as « Flap »)
- Fapclimb : A technique that involves climbing a vertical wall while accelerating and tapping the brake. It’s used to extend your momentum on a wall. It’s mostly used as a save if you reach near the top with barely enough speed, but you can potentially do more with it. It’s a fairly recent technique
- Fender : Wedging an obstacle corner between the rear wheel and the bike’s fender — used especially in Trials Evolution
- First Pass : First successful run through a track
- First Try : First attempt at completing a track
- Flat squish : Used to gain more distance and height and commonly used within back wheel only tracks. Done by allowing your front wheel to drop towards the floor whilst leaning forward, hitting the accelerator and then performing a bunny hop motion
- Fluish : Derived from the Squishy Squashy (see below), it’s essentially the same thing, but smoother — video
- FMX : Game mode in Trials Fusion, where the goal was to get the highest score possible with a system of tricks. This mode later disappeared, which is probably for the best
- FO (Fault Out) : Fault limit (typically 500) reached before completing the track
- Fragz save : Technique named after the French player Fragz, which allows you to avoid a fault. It consists of hitting the front of the bike against an obstacle, then performing a frontflip in order to catch the fender on that same obstacle — video
- French Flip : When you bw reverse up steep ramp then frontflip forward and land with your fender — video
- FW (Frontwheel) : Front wheel obstacle only — touching it with the rear wheel causes a fault
- Gimmick : A track made of front/rear wheel–only obstacles or original designs like Afterburners
- Hulk shoes : Comes from the legend of the ninja Ghetto. It’s the outfit he wore in Trials Evolution: neon green shoes, the same color as Hulk. Legend has it that if you wear them, you get stronger
- Inverted Spideman : TBD
- The Thyl (action) : Playing Fusion or Rising on current-gen consoles with an Xbox 360 controller, it’s coming from the player Thyl71
- The Thyl (quote) : Playing Fusion and saying “On Evo, that would’ve worked”, it’s coming from the player Thyl71
- The Thyl (modern quote) : Playing Rising and saying “On Fusion, that would’ve worked”, it’s coming from the player Thyl71
- Mountain : A track made entirely of Climb-type obstacles (mostly used in Trials Evolution)
- Ninja : A community-defined difficulty above Extreme. Currently divided into 9 sub-levels
- Ninja hook : Riding off the edge of a plank and using the back wheel brake to hook the bike to frontflip backwards down underneath, the player o SKUMBAG o coined it and was called the brake hook after that
- Ping-Pong : Minimizing your win time in duels to get more rematches with your opponent (Trials Frontier only)
- Plow : Term used to describe a weak, even bad player. In the French community, it’s also used because a “plot” (which sounds like “plow”) means a traffic cone, which hints at the skill level of the player being talked about
- Pirate tracks : This was the derogatory term for the ninja tracks people were making in Evo that took advantage of the new editor pieces and physics engine. We didn’t know it back then, but pirates were what allowed the ninja community to break past the level 5 ceiling with stuff like forced wheelies and backwards climbing up 45 degree angles
- Pure : A track containing only traditional/technical obstacles — no gimmicks or tricks
- Reverse Spiderman : Getting back on top of a platform when you are hanging off the right side of it with only your back wheel on top, trivial on Rising, much harder and rarer on Fusion — video.
- Slide : Taking a curve while only using the rear wheel
- Spiderman : Climbing a box from a full stop, with the front wheel locked at the top
- Squishy Squashy (Squish / Squishy) : Dragging the rear wheel across the edge of an obstacle without lifting it, to extend the distance of a bunny hop
- Squish bounce : TBD
- Stationary / Stationary bunny hop : Bouncing in place on the rear wheel — used to jump higher and / or farther
- Switch : Transitioning from front wheel balance to rear wheel balance (or vice versa)
- The « SaudiPro » : A player who downvotes 99% of Track Central tracks with “this deserves a dislike”
- The « Sheyrotonine » : Mysterious substance that makes you able to clear almost any track, it’s coming from the player Sheyroploplow
- Throttle / Throttle Control : Managing gas input to climb steep inclines effectively
- TIER : TBD
- Time Out (TO) : Failing a track by reaching the time limit (30 minutes)
- Tire Glitch : A texture bug that catches the bike’s tires and may cause slowdown or full stop
- Turbo Brake : On the King Crab, holding brake on a downhill ramp whilst at full speed will rapidly accelerate the bike
- TS (Timesaver) : Abbreviation for techniques that shorten time during a run
- Underslide : Similar to Slide, but the rider slides backward after clearing the obstacle — can seem like a mistake, but may be faster
- Wheelie : TBD
